About & credits

The original Motor Mania

Motor Mania was written by John A. Fitzpatrick and published by UMI (United Microware Industries) in 1982 — the same year the Commodore 64 itself went on sale, making it one of the very first driving games for the machine.

It is a top-down, vertically scrolling endurance drive. You set off from a gas station in an old-style racing car, push up to 80 mph across motorways, B-roads and dirt tracks, and try to cover as many miles as possible on five lives. A side panel shows a speedometer, fuel gauge and generator dial, your mileage, lives and spare tyre. Nails and broken glass puncture tyres, logs damage the radiator, potholes upset the steering, road patches slow you down, avalanches send boulders across the road, and crossroads bring cross traffic — including a fire engine.

This remake

Motormania 2.5D keeps those rules and that feel, but renders the road in a tilted 3D view with real-time lighting, shadows and a day/night cycle. Classic mode recreates the original's flat top-down screen — play area on the left, instrument panel on the right, the road sliding under a car that goes where you point it — redrawn at full resolution. It is an unofficial, non-commercial fan tribute written from scratch — it contains no code, graphics or sound from the original game.
